About This Item

UK,12mo wraps,p/back,1st edn(?) thus (no date -c. late 1940s?). [Originally and first published UK,8vo HB+dw/dj, COLLINS,1944. This edn,a COLLINS MYSTERY novel,No. 118c (middle digit indistinct) in the WHITE CIRCLE POCKET NOVEL series.Pseudonym Anthony Swift.] VG.No owner inscrptn and no printed price removal to cover - absence of publisher's price - some minor foxing/spotting to both covers.Bright, generally clean, matt, card covers with a black background with 2 hooded silhouettes one green+black holding a gun,one green+white holding a dagger; green lettering to white circle and the green+white hooded gunman Crime Club logo to front cover which also has a PELMAN INSTITUTE advert to verso, rear cover lightly grubbed/marked,with a jewellery company's b/w+green advert, and a further b/w illustrated Maltesers chocolate advert to inside of rear cover. Possibly an early variant example as the white silhouette figure's right arm stretches across the green silhouette figure, just below his chin. Not seen on other covers with the silhouette design.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping or creasing to edges and corners - one tiny snick to foot of spine/backstrip's front fold - but no other major nicks, tears or splits present,no noticeable reading creases to spine/backstrip which is also lightly grubbed in places, book with slight lean.Top+fore-edges aged/toned with foxing; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread apart from my own collation. UK,12mo wraps,p/back 1st edn,5-160pp [paginated] includes 25 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title with story precis to verso, title page with b/w hooded gunman with gun trademark and blank to verso.
A very uncommon British title from this author,of the contemporary period.
Joseph Jefferson Farjeon [b. 4 June,1883 – d. 6 June,1955.] was an English crime and mystery novelist,playwright and screenwriter.His sister Eleanor became a renowned children's author.
Hugh Donovan was a schoolmaster with a long summer vacation still six weeks away - and no plans yet made for his holiday. It was a trifling incident on the school cricket ground that decided that six weeks later Donovan should be travelling across Europe for that never-failing source of adventure, the Balkans. How he reached the grimly picturesque castle at Holz, and how he became involved in as extraordinary an adventure as yet any conceived by this resourceful and imaginative writer is told with all Mr.Farjeon's customary skill.
