About This Item
1888 Black Phalanx Negro Soldiers African American Military Civil War Abolition
Joseph T. Wilson was an African-American soldier who served in the 54th Massachusetts during the American Civil War. While his military career was not extensive, it did provide him with an understanding of the role that black men had during the 19th-century. He began writing poems and speeches, most of which were used to push an abolitionist-like agenda – black suffrage, full citizenship, and social reforms. His best book, and to this day most-known, was 'The Black Phalanx' which was the most comprehensive study of African-American military service in the 19th-century.
