He served as mayor until 1987, and during his tenure, he became internationally known as a fervent and prolific civil rights spokesman, delivering speeches alongside Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, and other historic proponents of the civil rights movement. Surprisingly, material SIGNED by him is quite SCARCE.
