Stated First Edition with no mention of subsequent printings (First Printing), in the first issue dust jacket with the 1070 code on the bottom of the front flap; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on a bookplate affixed to the half title page. An outstanding copy of this novel by the Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning author of "Beloved", "Song of Solomon", etc.; this book very scarce to find in collectible condition, particularly signed. This copy is in Near Fine condition with a square, tight binding, bright silver lettering over blue and gray boards with only a hint of fading, and clean white pages free of any markings; the book does show some light sunning to the board edges, some mild shelf wear to the spine foot, and some very light spotting to the lower exterior text block. Housed in a clean and bright very good dust jacket that shows minor rubbing and chipping to the spine ends and edges with a very small loss of material at the spine head, a 1.25"x1.25" closed tear to the back panel that has some unobtrusive tape repair done to the inside of the jacket, and a light overall age-toning. Not price clipped ($5.95 intact) and not ex-library. Overall, a beautiful, highly collectible volume; a cornerstone book for a 20th century literature collection and for the Toni Morrison fan! Protected in a mylar sleeve and will ship in a sturdy box.

Description:
Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Large 4to. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt; marbled pastedown endpapers. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. A rare title: OCLC locates only 13 libraries with any of the volumes. Ours is a very nice (vg+) copy with text and plates on clean and supple laid paper; very…
