About This Item

New York: Avon Books, 1992. 718 pages. Light soiling along page edges. Illustrated. From the comments on the back cover: "Mammoth in scope and scholarship, as vivid, fast-moving and breathtakingly compelling as the finest fiction, Thomas Pakenham's THE BOER WAR is the definitive account of this extraordinary conflict--a war precipitated by greed and marked by almost inconceivable blundering and brutalities....and whose shattering repercussions can be felt to this very day." Of the thousands of Boer citizens who died while imprisoned in British concentration camps, eighty percent of them were children. The British also resorted to a vicious "scorched earth" policy in which Boer property was destroyed and crops were burned.. 1st Avon Books Trade PB Printing. Soft Cover. Good. Boer War.

Synopsis

The war declared by the Boers of South Africa on October 11, 1899, gave the British, as Kipling said, 'No end of a lesson.' The public expected it to be over by Christmas. It proved to be the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and most humiliating war that Great Britain fought between 1815 and 1914.
