Protected in clear mylar cover. 424 pages with index, notes, bibliography and glossary. Illustrated in B/W; pictorial endpapers; pictorial jacket; green topstain applied to the top edge of the pages. French expedition to Egypt in 1798. Within a month Nelson had destroyed Napoleon's fleet, and within another month the sultan of the Ottoman empire declared war. While the expedition was doomed, the three years of French occupation had a lasting effect on Egypt. With the military forces came the so-called scientific and artistic commission whose work led to 9 large volumes of text illustrations covering everything from the temples of Karnak and Luxor, to a proposal to build a canal across the Isthmus of Suez.
