George Washington Cable was born on October 12, 1844 and died on January 31, 1925. He was a novelist noteworthy for the pragmatism of his interpretations of Creole life in his locale New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been referred to as "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century, as well as the first modern southern writer." In his dealing with racism, mixed-race families and high breed, his literature has been believed to forestall that of William Faulkner.
