Description:
1877 John Foxe's Book of Martyrs Acts & Monuments Illustrated Martyrology Cassel

"I am resolved to sacrifice everything in this transitory world, for the sake of salvation in a world that will last to eternity."
― John Foxe, Foxe's Book of Martyrs

A beautiful printing of John Foxe's famous "Actes and Monuments". Foxe began working on this landmark work in 1552. While in exile, in 1554, the first examples of this book were published in Latin focusing on the religious persecution of Lollards in England during the 1400s. However, the rest of his book was written in response to more persecution occurring throughout England.
This edition includes stunning full-page art depicting torture, assassinations and deaths of famous martyrs by George Housman Thomas and Sir J. Gilbert.

Folio, 2 volumes bound into one in full near contemporary full brown calf over beveled boards elaborately stamped and paneled in blind, rebacked, seven raised bands to the spine, later brass fixtures to the front and rear panels, text in two columns, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. Text lacks preliminaries and title-page, and first five leaves remounted and partially restored (with significant loss to text), and final twenty leaves with significant chipping. In very good condition. A well-preserved example of this monumental work, published over four centuries ago. Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary I, Foxe's Acts and Monuments was an affirmation of the English Reformation in a period of religious conflict between… Read More
