Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1979. The autobiography of one of the most important innovators of Twentieth-Century American Classical Music (also known as "Jazz"). John Birks Gillespie's virtuoso career spanned the end of Swing, through BeBop, Cool Jazz, and on to Ethnic/World Music. Diz (1917-1993) was an incredible influence, and his compositions ("Night in Tunisia," "Salt Peanuts," et.al.) remain standards today. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Orange paper-covered boards with a blue cloth spine titled in gilt. Clean text; xix, 552 pages. Indexed. Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs. This copy has been SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Diz on the front paste-down, dated in 1983. Lightly bumped, with a bit of rub and minor fade to the spine. The dustjacket is complete but clipped (with a torn price-tag on the rear panel. Spine is darkened and there is considerable chipping at the margins. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good (Minus). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
