About This Item

Noah was born a crime, the son of a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Born a Crime tells the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. These interwoven stories are equally the story of Trevor's fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother — a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that ultimately threatens her own life.

Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with wit and honesty. His stories weave together to depict a lovable delinquent making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love.

Synopsis

The host of The Daily Show With Trevor Noah traces his wild coming of age during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed, offering insight into the farcical aspects of the political and social systems of today's world.

Reviews

On Jun 11 2019, a reader said:
I'm glad I stuck with this book to the end because that was were the great storytelling occurred. Trevor Noah writes just as he talks, and I can only take his humor in small doses. His flippancy gets to me after a bit. The picture he paints of growing up in South Africa, even post-apartheid, is so bleak that it's hard for me to appreciate the humor that Noah employs in unfolding the story of his early life. Though this is his own autobiography, Noah's chief accomplishment is in painting a portrait of his mother, Patricia Noah, whom he loves and appreciates in his own Trevor way. Toward the end of the book, he writes, "When you love someone you create a new world for them. My mother did that for me...." Though it's not my style, I've come to appreciate those like Trevor Noah who try to make the world a less hostile place by poking fun of its injustice and corruption. Like Mark Twain, Trevor Noah knows that humor is a powerful weapon, perhaps as powerful as his mother's prayers.
