About This Item

Boston, MA: Nathan Hale and Charles Hale, 1853. 56 x 72 cm. Long commentary from The London Times castigates Sen. Lewis Cass of Michigan for his mischievous speeches, and his disregard of the Bulwer-Clayton Treaty. There's much apprehension over American designs on Cuba, which southern slaveholders wish to acquire. Article looks at Cobden, Kossuth and Cass as troublemakers, inveighing against ""secret diplomacy"" amongst European capitals. Report of the Caloric ship Ericsson at the mouth of the Potomac at Alexandria, VA. Ship has just been operating her engines in very heavy weather in passage from Sandy Hook, for 73 hours. Eighty sailors from Charlestown Navy Yard have left for New York to join the expedition sailing for Japan. Ad for Regular Packet through to San Francisco via Aspinwall and Panama aboard the new side wheel, double engine ships Winfield Scott and Cortes on the Pacific side, and Union on the Atlantic side. For a fare of $8 to $20 passengers sail aboard Union from New York to Aspinwall, Navy Bay, whence they take the Panama rail road to Gorgona, thence travel by mules or on foot, to Panama, at which point splendid new steamers await to proceed immediately to San Francisco. The difference in fare is dependent upon whether you use mules or walk, and amount of baggage. Newspaper, tear in fold, fair. . Catalogs: Newspaper/History.
