London and New York. Macmillan and Co. 1886. Bound in gilt ruled, blind embossed and gilt titled blue green cloth. Thick 12mo. First American Edition and first single volume edition. Edel and Laurence A28B. Small white flecks to front cover. Headpiece chipped. Rear hinge rubbed. Signatures askew but tight due to previous professional repairs. Ink inscription to front free endsheet. Small previous owners label to front pastedown. Chipping to endsheet at front hinge. Several incidental light pencil annotations. All in all, a Very Good (if repaired) quite servicable copy.
Synopsis
The Bostonians is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Century Magazine in 1885–1886 and then as a book in 1886. This bittersweet tragicomedy centers on an odd triangle of characters: Basil Ransom, an unbending political conservative from Mississippi; Olive Chancellor, Ransom's cousin and a zealous Boston feminist; and Verena Tarrant, a pretty protege of Olive's in the feminist movement.
