New York: Macmillan and Co, 1886. First American Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, [i-iv], [1]-449 pages. In Good condition. Quarter bound in maroon cloth with red cloth boards and gilt text on spine. Boards have rubbing and fraying to corners exposing boards, tearing to spine edges, black marks on both covers, and moderate edge wear and shelf wear. Binding shaken. Textblock has bookplate on front pastedown, splitting to interior hinges, foxing to many pages, front endpaper to copyright page mostly detached, and splitting to multiple gutters. Ex-Library. Synopsis
The Bostonians is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Century Magazine in 1885–1886 and then as a book in 1886. This bittersweet tragicomedy centers on an odd triangle of characters: Basil Ransom, an unbending political conservative from Mississippi; Olive Chancellor, Ransom's cousin and a zealous Boston feminist; and Verena Tarrant, a pretty protege of Olive's in the feminist movement.
