Boswell seems a man troubled by depression as well as pressure from his father and a desire to raise himself socially. Boswell was a Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer, born in Edinburgh. He is best known for his biography of his friend and older contemporary, the English writer Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), which is commonly said to be the greatest biography written in the English language. A great mass of Boswell's diaries, letters, and private papers were recovered from the 1920s to the 1950s, and their ongoing publication - including this collection - transformed his reputation. Contents: Boswell in Holland, 1763-1764; Correspondence with Belle de Zuylen (Zélide) and others, 1764-1769; Appendix I. Boswell's inviolable plan; Appendix II. Boswell's French theme on the Aston Family; Appendix III. Letter of Abraham Gronovius to Boswell; Appendix IV. Letter of François Mazerac to Boswell; Appendix V. Letter of Belle de Zuylen to Boswell.
