About This Item
[Providence, 1970. Very good.. Broadside on heavy cardstock, 22 x 14 inches. Some edge wear, light chipping, creasing, and foxing. A striking and substantial broadside issued by the Rhode Island AFL-CIO in solidarity with the United Farm Workers during their famed grape and lettuce boycott in the late-1960s and early-'70s. The entire text of the broadside reads, as follows: "United Farm Workers Boycott Non-UFW Grapes and Lettuce Rhode Island AFL-CIO." The UFW's national boycott on grapes and lettuce reached Rhode Island by the end of the '60s. In October 1969, during a national tour aimed at widening awareness of the boycott, Cesar Chavez even visited Rhode Island, joining picketers outside a market called Almacs in East Providence (which became a flashpoint of the boycott) before meeting with the governor. Officials of the state's AFL-CIO called for support of the striking workers in California by encouraging Rhode Islanders to cease purchases of table grapes, and even encouraged locals to join picketing efforts. The strike effectively ended on April 1, 1970 when the UFW struck a deal with most California table grape growers. The present picket sign is emblematic of the wide-ranging reach of the UFW's grape strike. We could locate no other copies.
