Fifty-two years after a U.S. plane was shot down in a German village, a historian researching the incident uncovers the identities of all the men involved, even the Luftwaffe pilot credited with the "kill". He goes on to contact those who are still alive, and invites them to return to the village for a reunion and to participate in ceremonies of reconciliation. Thus begins E. D. McKenzie's odyssey into the past. The crash ended the author's aerial combat duty but began the conflict of facing the enemy on the ground and struggling for survival as a POW, imprisoned in the infamous Stalag 17. In the book are revealed stories of the Stalag previously held secret or unexplained..
