About This Item
London: Macmillan & Co, 1882. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very good. A lovely edition featuring full-page plates and numerous textual vignettes by influential English illustrator Randolph Caldecott (1846-86). Bracebridge Hall (1822) was originally published under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon, and centers on an English manor, its inhabitants, and the tales they tell. Interspersed with witty, evocative sketches of country life among the English nobility is the well-known tale "The Stout Gentleman" and stories based on English, French, and Spanish folklore, vividly recounted with Washington Irving's inimitable blend of elegance and colloquial dash. Octavo. In a one-half green morocco over green cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping, five raised bands, and marbled endpapers. Period ink gift inscription to the half-title. The spine is a bit sun faded; otherwise very good.
