About This Item

Stockholm: Tryckt I Ecksteinska Tryckeriet, 1824., 1824. Text: 2 Volumes in 1. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., ix, 242 [ie. 238: pp. 109-112 omitted in pagination], [1 leaf]errata; viii, [243]-496, [1 leaf]errata. folding table printed on both sides. additional engraved title in each vol. oblong folio atlas of plates containing: lithographed title, 16 aquatint, lithographed & engraved plates & maps of varying sizes (1 folding) & 2 leaves of letterpress. text bound in contemporary quarter morocco over glazed paper bds., spine stamped in gilt & blind, the plate volume in the same glazed paper bds., expertly rebacked to match. the smaller plates & 2 text leaves tipped on to larger sheets. A nice set (minor marginal soiling to some plates, long tear in folding plate repaired - no loss). First Edition of this rare and finely illustrated Swedish travel narrative to America. Klinckowström, a naval officer, was sent to America by the Swedish government to study naval installations and ship construction. The present account, written in epistolary format, describes his travels in New York, Washington, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and includes extensive discussion of towns and cities, social life, aboriginals, commerce and finance, shipping, manufacturing, politics, the U.S. constitution, police, prisons, immigration, West Point, the navy, and a meeting with President Monroe. The atlas volume is particularly valuable, containing fine large aquatint views of Broadway, described by Stokes and Haskell as "one of the most picturesque and interesting early views of Broadway and City-Hall" - showing period costume and modes of transportation from an elegant coach to a small push-cart, New York Harbour - showing steam ferries and sailboats, Gerards Bank in Philadelphia, the bridge over the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, Hoboken, the Capitol in Washington, two large engraved maps of the Northern States and Canada, and the Southern States by John Melish, and smaller lithographed and engraved maps and plans of New York, Philadelphia, etc. Howes K-201 (incorrect pagination). Larson 400. Sabin 38053 (lacking atlas). Stokes & Haskell, American Historical Prints, 1932, pp. 102, 105, pl. 46a.. F. Hardcover.
