About This Item

Oxford University Press, Oxford, first edition, 1975. 3 vols in slipcase, cloth, 4to, 27 cm,. xxvi, 290 + xvi, 748 + xvii, 142 pp, profusely illustrated, some plates in colour. Over 1,500 entries. From the blurb: "From the anonymous treatise on grafting published by Wynkyn de Wörde in about 1520, to the first of Humphry Repton's great works on landscape gardening, published in 1793, Henrey's monumental work offers a detailed history of English books and pamphlets on botany, gardening, horticulture and silviculture, together with a comprehensive bibliography giving their library locations in Britain and Ireland. Volume I deals with herbals, gardening books and early scientific and floristic works of the 16th and 17th centuries, and contains the bibliography for those centuries. Volume II is devoted to the 18th century and covers an increasingly wide field of interest, ranging from herbáis to books on plants of economic importance. Volume III contains the bibliography for the 18th century." Thornton & Tully: "Over 1,500 entries are included in the bibliography, and the author has personally seen and collated most of the items, and indicates their locations. This well illustrated work covers all aspects of the subject, including herbals, floras, nurserymen and their publications, work on gardening, garden design, and on botanical drawing books. The history is in narrative form, and the standard of production of the work is commensurate with the labour and skill expended on the text." The set comprises: Vol. I : The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries - History and Bibliography; Vol. II, The Eighteenth Century - History, Vol. III :The Eighteenth Century -Bibliography.
