Vignettes include: Georgetown, Christmas Cataract, New Amsterdam, and Ataraipu or the Devil's Rock. 10 x 12 1/2" plus margins. Attractive decorative border around edge, period outline color, very good condition.

London & New York: John Tallis & Company, 1851. Other. 350 by 245mm (13¾ by 9¾ inches).. Steel engraving, hand colored in outline and wash. A decorative antique map of British Guayana with many details. We do find engraved place names, rivers, lakes and mountains. The map is decorated with four finely hand colored engraved vignettes: of the river Berbice, Ataraipu or the Devils Rock and Georgetown. The actual map was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. The illustrations were engraved by various artists: R. Radclyffe, W. Lacy, J. Rogers, J. H. Kernot, J. B. Allen, T. Fleming, H. Winkles, R. Baker after drawings by H. Warren, H. Winkles and H. Wray. In excellent condition.

For the Great Exhibition in 1851 John Tallis (1817-1876) worked with engraver John Rapkin (1815-1876) to publish the 'Illustrated World Atlas', whose maps were later re-issued by the London Printing and Publishing Company under the Tallis imprint. Their maps are prized for their wonderful steel-engraved vignettes showing the peoples, customs, architecture, landmarks, flora, and fauna of each country.
