1589 ENORMOUS LAW Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian Codex Digest Godefroy 6v SET

"Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force."
― Justinian I
Justinian's 'Corpus Juris Civilis' is unquestionably the fundamental work on law and jurisprudence! Parts of this work were originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook – they carried legal weight …as law! It includes four distinct parts – Codex, Digest, Institutes, and Novellae – each written with a different purpose.
'Digest' or 'Pandectae' is a collection of juristic treatises taken from various legal writings of Ulpian and Paulus. 'Codex'
was the Justinian's attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner – each of these works is included in this enormous 16th-century six-volume edition.
The Godefroy editions of this iconic work were influential in the law field well into the 20th-century. While Godefroy was known as a jurist, his… Read More

Ahmed Kamil Akdik is one of the last great Ottoman calligraphers. Born in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Istanbul in 1861, Ahmed Kâmil displayed an interest in the art of calligraphy from his earliest years in primary school. In 1879 he began to study thuluth (sülüs) and naskhi (nesih) scripts with the most renowned calligrapher of the era, Sami Efendi (1838-1912), and after earning his certificate in 1884 with the approval of Şevki Efendi, he became one of the foremost Ottoman calligraphers. His certificate (icazet) is preserved in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum.
After beginning to work for the Divan-ı Hümayun (the Ottoman Imperial Council) in 1894, he learned from his teacher Sami Efendi the divani and celi divani scripts, as well as the inscription of the tuğra, or imperial monogram, and replaced his teacher… Read More

Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications, 1948. Soft cover. Near Fine. Staple-bound in thin card covers (green with black lettering). Light toning along spine. Interior is clean and unmarked. pp. 18, plus [6] publisher's advertising. 8.4 x 5.25 inches. A witty spoof, wherein the author purports to find a method of ''insemination,'' one that proves the possibility of the honor and innocence of girls and women who are found pregnant. He reports that he has devised an instrument that will capture the spermata (which of course is found floating in the air and, when revealed under a microscope, be found to be actual tiny, fully formed men and women). He goes on to note that he has administered the spermata orally to his test subject, his own chamber-maid, under the guise of medicine. Voila! This short treatise is a reprint of a spoof letter, originally addressed to the Royal Society at London in 1750. The author was Sir John Hill, though speculated to have been Rev. H.… Read More

Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
