About This Item
Second edition, no date. The first edition was 1846. Green leather boards are scuffed at the head and tail and the corners, but the binding is tight. All 60 hand colored plates are present. There is a stain in the middle of the leading edge which permeates into the pages for a half inch. It looks like a water stain. It diminishes by page 40. The stain does not intrude onto the images on the plates. There is toning throughout. There is a gift inscription dated 1913, "Elizabeth Evelyn Halton from her aunt Evelyn Houson, who had it from her grandfather William Bickmore, October 21st, 1913". Genealogy reveals that there was an Elizabeth Evelyn Halton (born 1900), whose mothers maiden name was Houson. If that is so, she then married George Lionel Pepler, who later was knighted in 1948, at which time she became Lady Pepler. Sir George Pepler was well known for town planning and there is an award named after him. I priced the book as if it were just a book. If I can confirm the association signature as that of Lady Pepler, I might be inclined to raise the price.
