About This Item
[Salt Lake City], 1914. Large format. Silver gelatin photograph [16 cm x 21 cm] / [6.25" x 8.25"] on a gray mount [25 cm x 30.5 cm] / [10" x 12.5"]. Overall in nice condition with only minor rubbing to the corners. Nice view of the Brooks Arcade building at the corner of 3rd south and State in Salt Lake City. Signage for Shepherd the Magazine Man, Nelson Glove, C.H. Gibbs Mining Engineer, and Hemenway & Moser Cigar Store are visible.
Like other Utah commerical buildings of the time period, the Brooks Arcade is an example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, a style which became popular in the state's commercial buildings erected during the building boom of 1889-1893. Intended to be six stories high, the building apparently began to sink under the weight of its brick and stone superstructure and only three stories were completed.
