About This Item
New York,NY: Scholastic Inc. 1992. Hard Cover. Near Fine. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. ISBN:0590466488. Abby Award Book of the Year announced by the American Booksellers Association. The real feast here are the paintings, Horses, wildlife, Indians, forest are portrayed in a softly beautiful palette and with a lyrical realism that rarely happens in modern children's books. Chief Seattle's explanations are pleasantly vir tuous and won't stand up well against the Song of Hiawatha. They are a formula for preserving the earth. Chief Seattle died in 1866 and versions of the remarks quoted here have figured in the world e c ology movement. Book is unpaginated but there are about 28 pages, roughly 12 by 9 and a half inches, all pages glowing and beautiful with a kind of nature-figured radiance Jeffers was so determined to achieve. A memorable talk on nature preservation carried into a children's grand pictorial. In an afterword, Jeffers explains the origins of Chief Seattle's statement. The top & bottom of the spin e a nd all 4 outside corner tips are rubbed. The top & bottom of the spine and the 2 outside bottom corner tips are slightly bumped..
