About This Item
Barbara Michaels: This is another pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, better known as Elizabeth Peters. As Michaels, she is known for Gothic and supernatural thrillers. Mertz wrote 29 novels as Michaels, 39 as Peters, and one nonfiction book under her real name. Mertz died in 2013.
John Ball: Ball was best known for writing a series featuring Virgil Tibbs, beginning with "In the Heat of the Night". There were seven novels in that series, plus three more featuring Jack Tallon, and nine stand-alone novels. Ball also worked as a broadcaster, daily columnist, science writer, and music critic. Ball died in 1988. Singapore is the seventh and final Virgil Tibbs novel.
William Vivian Butler: After John Creasy died in 1973, Butler took up the J. J. Marric pen name to continue the George Gideon series. He managed to add five more novels to the Gideon world before he, too, died, in 1987. Gideon's Law is Butler's second and Gideon's 23rd in the series.
Synopsis
There are terrible secrets from generations past buried at Maidenwood. Medical student Julie Newcomb has returned to her family's decaying plantation—the site of so many painful childhood memories—to tend to her tyrannical grandmother, felled by a stroke. The fire of malevolence still burns in the cruel, despotic matriarch's eyes—yet, for Julie, a faint spark of redemption and second chances flickers in this hated, haunted place. But her hope—and her life—are seriously threatened by a nightmare reborn...and by the grim discovery on the lonely road to Maidenwood of the earth-browned skeletons of a mother and child.
