Kauffmann was one of the most significant and creative Australian exponents of Pictorialism. Born in South Australia, Kauffmann went to Europe from 1887 to 1897 to study art photography. By 1917 he was established as a professional photographer in Melbourne.In 1996 a travelling exhibition of John Kauffmann's work, 'Soft But True,' was arranged by the National Gallery of Australia, and to mark the occasion the Gallery published John Kauffmann, Art Photographer written by Gael Newton, the Gallery's Curator of Australian Photography. Original frame. CONDITION : Slight oxidation at edges.
