About This Item
London: John F. Shaw Book. Very Good. Blue Cloth. 8vo (approx. 13 x 19cm). Complete in five volumes, approximately 280 pages per volume, 158 numbered chromolithographic plates with original tissue guards, some folding (printed by Wyman and Sons), full page b/w illustrations, in-text illustrations, adverts for W. H. Allen's publications. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and stamped decoration to the spines, very good with a little general wear and slight rubbing to extremities, spines a little faded. Top edge gilt. Contents clean and tight, neat signature to front paste-down of vol. I, dated 24/9/37. These five volumes are part of Allen's Naturalist's Library, which was also published by Edward Lloyd as part of Lloyd's Natural History in the 1890's. This particular edition published by John F. Shaw appears to be very rare, and is perhaps a later edition, but bound up from original text-blocks and plates, which appear identical to the LLoyd's edition. It has good margins and is a slightly larger format that LLoyd's edition. A very good tight set..
