Contemporary prize binding of blue polished calf by Relfe Brothers for Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Ashbourne, their crest gilt-stamped to upper cover, sides ruled with gilt foliate border, spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, red morocco label, gilt inner dentelles, marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Bookplate of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Ashbourne, inscribed in ink, 'For Latin & French / Awarded to J.W Brindley / William J. Butcher Bretes Head Master / Date 29.7.1903. Very light shelfwear to baords, generally an excellent example. James Anthony Froude was an English historian and biographer whose History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada fundamentally altered the whole direction of Tudor studies. He was immensely prolific, producing also novels and essays. Britannica.
