Leovardiae : excudit Franciscus Halma, D. Ordinum Frisiae typographus ordinarius, 1714-1715. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Two volumes uniformly bound in original full vellum bindings with raised bands and handwritten titling to spines, the upper and lower covers showing blind stamped borders and decorative centre pieces. Both books firm and square, no splits, just rubbed and mildly bumped. Contents generally clean and tidy, endpapers a little tattered, paste-downs lifting and showing the book label of A. Roobol and 'Cat, 260' in blue ink. Size: 4to 270mm x 210mm. Collation: pp. [l], 724; [iii] 726-1344 + 28 plates, 6 of which folding. Although there are several copies listed on COPAC with plates numbering 32 or 25, this is the fifth we have seen with 29 plates. Bound without the leaf of binder's instructions sometimes present in vol. 2. Engraved title-page to vol.I, title-pages to each vol. in red and black with vignettes, engraved head-pieces and illustrations in the text. A little light toning, occasional faint ink spots, tiny scorch hole to margin pp.9-10, short closed tear to margin of 3rd folding plate. This edition, the second by Pitiscus, is called 'by far the better' by Didbin, who also quotes Harwood as praising the 'vast number of beautiful cuts' and the 'learned perpetual commentary.' Moss describes it as, 'a very excellent and valuable edition, in which the industry as well as the learning of the editor has been fully displayed... he has inserted extracts from nearly 900 ancient and modern authors.' Pitiscus' edition first appeared at Utrecht in 1699. References, see: Dibdin II, 442; Moss II, 632; Schweiger III, 979.
