About This Item

Hong Kong: Libra Press, 1987. First Edition, Limited to 350 copies. Complete in 21 volumes plus The California Missions Bibliography. The books are in uniformly fine condition, in dustjackets (light occasional wear). From 1769 to 1823 Spain established twenty-one missions in Alta (or upper) California. These twenty-one missions were charged with converting the natives to Christianity, and provided an important strong-hold for Spain in Alta California. "Monsignor Weber's documentary studies on [the] California missions represent an important contribution that will take their place on the shelves next to the works of Engelhardt and Geiger." - Gary Kurtz, Catholic Historical Review LXVIII. The author, Monsignor Francis J. Weber, is a distinguished Catholic scholar, an Honorary Chaplain to His Holiness the Pope, and the archivist for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at the San Fernando Mission, as well as a former professor of history at Queen of Angels Seminary.
