A native of Oregon, Markham wrote one of the most popular poems of all time; "The Man With the Hoe." In "California the Wonderful" Markham's poetic sensibilities make for compelling descriptions of the land and people of the West Coast of the US. Great illustrations. This copy with tipped in signed inscription by the author: "Victory attend you in all your words and ways. Edwin Markham." Bookplate of early 20th-century financier and California booster J. Harvey McCarthy on front fixed endpaper.
