"In the two decades following 1849, artists and printers in the West produced thousands of vivid pictorial records on sheets of writing paper, and these remain the major surviving visual account of California in that era." This catalogue fully describes over 300 California letter sheets and is illustrated with numerous reproductions, including a folding facsimile (housed in the rear pocket). Quarto. Original pictorial paper-covered boards over an orange morocco spine with gilt stamping. Near fine.
