NY: Norman L. Munro, 1884.. 8vo. Original tan wrappers designed and printed in black. 112pp. + 4 leaves of publisher's ads and three blank leaves at the rear. Issued as Vol. 1, No. 215 in Munro's Library, Pocket Size. Published Sept. 4, 1884. Chipping at edges of covers and base of spine, large piece gone from upper corner of cover, just affecting a few words of text on the cover, some creasing, about very good. At the bottom of the front cover is the legend: "SPECIAL EDITION". A very early American issue o f t h i s f a m o u s book, which was first published in England as an Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual in 1883. CALLED BACK was a best-selling book in Britain, and established the pattern for the "Shilling Shockers" which were to become so preval en t. There are innumerable editions and issues; this is surely one of the first American issues.
