About This Item
Portland. ME: Bailey & Noyes, 1866. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. A sharp copy of the uncommon 1866 1st edition. Tight and VG to VG+ in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-insignia to the front panel and crisp gilt-lettering along the spine. Minor staining and foxing to the preliminaries, otherwise very clean internally. INCLUDES A LAID-IN 1964 TYPED NOTE FROM A PENNSYLVANIA BOOKSELLER SAYING THE YEAR-OF-PUBLICATION INSCRIPTION ON THE FIRST BLANK ENDPAPER IS ACTUALLY THAT OF BRIG. GEN. THOMAS CHURCH HASKELL (CH) SMITH (1819-1897) OF THE UNION ARMY, THOUGH HERE HE ONLY SIGNED IT "GENERAL" RATHER THAN USING HIS FULL NAME. (THIS WAS CONFIRMED, ACCORDING TO THE BOOKSELLER'S NOTE, BY THE SCOUT WHO SOLD HIM THE BOOK, AS HE BOUGHT ALL THE BOOKS OF GEN. SMITH'S FAMILY).
