About This Item
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1968. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is crisp and fresh. There is a former owner's name on the top of the half title page, but no other marks or wear. The red cloth covers are fresh, with minor wear at edges and corner. The dust jacket is not price-clipped, and is in very good condition, with light edgewear and rubs. Synopsis: Horowitz examines socialism in Canada. By means of a comparison between the English-Canadian and the American political cultures, he accounts for the greater political importance of socialism in Canada and explains why the leadership of organized labour in Canada cast its lot with a minor socialist party (the New Democratic Party) rather than follow the American example of working within the major political parties. Louis Hartz's theory of "fragment" cultures is carried forward and applied to Canada. The remainder of the book follows the history of the labour movement and the socialist parties in Canada from the early 20th century to its significant conclusion -- the support (and formation) of a labour party by many Canadian unions.
