About This Item

Grosset & Dunlap, New York [1929]. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A reprint of the second Philo Vance detective novel, issued to accompany the release of the 1929 cinema adaptation and with four stills from the movie used here as plates. 8vo. x, 343pp + [i] publisher's advertisement. Black cloth lettered and ruled in green at the spine and upper board. Top edge lightly dust soiled, and with just a trace of light partial browning to the free endpapers. Contemporary former owner details neatly inked to the front free endpaper. Very good indeed in very slightly rubbed and dust soiled dust wrapper, with no price printed to the flaps. The front panel of the dust wrapper reproduces the design from the original 1927 Scribner wrapper, and the rear panel shows a colourful stylised illustration of William Powell in the movie role, designed by Skrenda. The second instalment in the author's celebrated series of amateur sleuth novels; this one said to have broken "all modern publishing records for detective fiction"..
