About This Item

New York: Liveright Books, 1980. Reprint. Paperback. Good +. 116 p; paperback. PO name on half title page, some notes and underlining. "First published in 1923, and now reissued with a new introduction by Darwin T. Turner [Iowa State U], CANE is an acknowledged classic - a powerful work of innovative fiction evoking Negro life in the south, primarily Georgia." Author Jean Toomer was born in Washington DC in 1894, the son of an educated black Creole family.

Synopsis

Cane is considered the first novel of the Harlem Renaissance, and today is revered as a classic. This collection was originally published in 1923, sold 500 copies, and then disappeared until it was re-discovered in the 1960s (two years after the author's death). Considered ‘High Modernist’ the novel is composed of vignettes including narrative prose, poetry, and dialogue, moving in a circular fashion to combine life experiences of black in the rural south and urban north.
