Three volumes (complete), large octavo size, approximately 1380 pp. Geoffrey Chaucer's (ca. 1343-1400) "Canterbury Tales" is a middle English collection of stories originally written between 1387-1400. Thought of as Chaucer's magnum opus, it has been reprinted countless times and is one of the most important works of English literature (n.b., info from Wiki).
___DESCRIPTION: Three volumes (complete) uniformly bound in brown quarter leather over cloth (each volume in different colour of cloth), gilt lettering stamped onto the spines, titles enclosed in a red "spine label", illustrated endpapers of the pilgrims, title pages in red and black; all volumes large octavo size (9 3/8" by 5 5/8"), pagination as follows: Vol. I [i-iv] v-lx [1] 2-331; Vol. II [i-iv] v-vii, [1, blank] [1] 2-379; Vol. III [i-iv] v-vii [1, blank] [1] 2-600. In publisher's slipcase covered with patterned red paper.
___CONDITION: Volumes fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and the set is entirely free of prior owner markings; the sole condition issue we see being a few leaves with corners bent a few mm. Slipcase near fine, strong and sturdy, with no splits or tears; a few areas of extremely minor wear and soil.
