About This Item

(Cape Town: Purnell, 1967). Small 4to; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; decorative endpapers; pp. (xii) + 145 + (ii), incl. index; plates. Dustwrapper rubbed and a bit edgeworn, with some foxing to reverse side; edges a little browned. Good to very good condition. "From the reviews of drama ballet written by Denis Hatfield in the 1940's this selection has been made to evoke a period of blossoming in South African theatre. Seventy plays and their players are discussed; thirty ballets are reviewed, most of these on the occasion of their first presentation, and other productions of drama and dancing are noticed. Here you will find John Cranko producing his first ballet; Sid James making his first appearance on the legitimate stage; David Poole beginning his dancing career; Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies and Marda Vanne acting in memorable productions; the Brian Brooke Company staging its first play …. Cape Town was the cultural centre of South Africa in this decade, and Denis Hatfield's reviews add interesting pages to the annals of the Cape stage." .
