About This Item

New York City, NY: Random House, 1987. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Random House, 1987. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 722 pages. Massive Reader. The best introduction to the literary art and achievement of Truman Capote. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several despite the volume's intimidating heft. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Truman Capote's "A Capote Reader". Published posthumously and presented in six sequences. This is not a sampler, but a generous, multi-course banquet. It contains twelve short stories, two novellas ("The Grass Harp" and "Breakfast At Tiffany's"), thirteen travel sketches, reportage, celebrity profiles, seventeen essays, and pieces that appear in book form for the first time - and do NOT appear anywhere else. "Vivid sketches of places from Tangiers to Brooklyn and fascinating insights into the lives of his contemporaries, from Jane Bowles and Cecil Beaton to Marilyn Monroe and Tennessee Williams. Generous space is devoted to reportage, including 'The Muses Are Heard', on his trip to Communist Europe in the 1950's with the cast of 'Porgy and Bess' " (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Truman Capote readers. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Random House indicated its first editions at the time with the statement ("First Edition") and a number line that begins or ends in the Number 2. Copies available online have serious flaws (because the book has been pored over) or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy.
