About This Item
Oakland CA: University of California Press. Near Fine in Fine dj. (c.2022). First Edition. Hardcover. [book is nice and clean, with minimal handling wear from a single reading; the jacket is flawless]. (B&W photographs) The first major book on Davies since the Fred Lawrence Guiles biography (1972) and her own posthumous and somewhat spurious memoir, "The Times We Had: Life with William Randolph Hearst" (1975), this biography aims to rehabilitate the stereotypical image of the actress as a marginally-talented rich man's mistress, whose legacy had been further tainted by the unfair association of her with the "Susan Alexander Kane" character in Orson Welles's CITIZEN KANE. Based on "meticulous research, unprecedented access to archives around the world, and interviews with acquaintances and family members," the book's goal is to give Davies's life a strongly feminist spin, while "pull[ing] back layers of myth to show a complex and fiercely independent woman, ahead of her time, who carved her own path." .
