Expanded reprint of the scarce 1940 original, with a new foreword (by John B. Thomas III, Curator of the Collection), table of contents, and a 13-page list of books added to the collection in 1986. Limited to 700 sets. 3 volumes: xli, 378 + [iii]-v, 379-791, [1] + [iii]-v,793-1320, [1] pp. 150 illustrations, including 65 plates. A landmark reference that fully describes Pforzheimer's legendary collection of the best books of the period, including Chaucer, Shakepeare, Bacon, Spenser, Milton, Donne, Locke, Chapman, Gascoigne, Jonson and many others; plus letters of Queen Elizabeth I, John Locke, John Evelyn (including six holograph letters to Pepys); the Bulstrode Papers and Marprelate Tracts; in total 1,105 printed books and 169 autographs and manuscripts. The original 1940 printing, limited to only 150 sets, is so useful and sought after that it sells for between $8,000 and $10,000 on the rare occasion it becomes available. This edition reproduces the original's design (by Bruce Rogers) but with new typography by M. Honhe and J. von Hoelle. Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall by 4.5" thick. Uniformly bound in the original gilt-stamped maroon cloth. This large, heavy 3 volume set will require extra postage for Priority and International shipments.
