About This Item
New Orleans, LA: T. Fitzwilliam & Co., 1892. A colorful image of the Proteus procession held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 29, 1892, published in a special carnival edition of The Picayune newspaper. The theme was 'A Dream of the Vegetable Kingdom' - eighteen decorated floats pulled by horses with titles, 'Proteus,' 'Cacti,', 'Strawberries,' Thistles,' Water-Melon,' Fungi,' etc.
Celebrating Carnival is a long standing tradition in New Orleans on the evening of Lundi Gras. The Proteus Procession was designed by the Krewe of Proteus, one of several parade Krewes/groups, in existence since 1882. Themes change annually for each Krewe. While the Krewe of Proteus stopped parading in 1992 after legislation required social organizations and Krewes to certify that they do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, disability or sexual orientation, the tradition of Carnival and Mardi Gras parades continues today.
28 1/4 x 42 1/4", original folds, ruffled on top margin, pleasing color and imaginative float decorations.
