Fascinating study of the 1844 Illinois trial of 5 defendants who murdered the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, and his brother Hyrum. The helpless pair were incarcerated in the Carthage jail at the time. This is an objective history of the trial, its eye-witnesses and jurors, the strategies of the lawyers, and the prevailing public opinion that made a fair trial impossible.
