Printed books 1477-1700, with several manuscripts of the 12th, 15th, 16th & 17th centuries. Vol. II. Pt. 1. Introduction to printed books 1701-1800. Vol II Pt. 2. Printed books 1701-1800. The introduction to Vol. I contains the following essays: Botany from 840-1700 (by H. W. Rickett); Medical aspects of early botanical books (by J. F. Fulton); The dawn-time of modern husbandry (by P. B. Sears); The illustration of early botanical works (by W. Blunt); Printing in the 15th and 16th centuries as represented in the Hunt Collection (by M. B. Stillwell). Then follows the chronological catalogue of 405 books printed between 1477 and 1700 and of mss., with extensive descriptions of the items included. Appendix dealing with facsimiles, transcripts and reprints. Vol. II, Part. 1 contains the following essays: 18th-century botanical prints in color (by G. Dunthorne); Gardening books of the 18th century (by J. S. L. Gilmour); Botanical gardens and botanical literature in the 18th century (by W. T Stearn); A bibliographical method for the description of botanical books (by A Stevenson). The second Part. contains a chronological index of books printed in the 18th century and present in the library (764 in all) with extensive descriptions, an index to scientific names (pp. 557-579) and a general index (pp. 581-655), compiled by A. Stevenson. Fine set.
