About This Item
London: Sotheby & Co, 10 April 1962. Good. 29 cm square; 63 pages, including 16 color plates and 15 half-tone plates. Preface by Maugham. Frontispiece portrait of Maugham by Marie Laurencin. Bound in green paper-covered boards superimposed with the "Mauresque" symbol that Maugham adopted as his seal. Boards somewhat warped, spine cracked at head; edge wear. Quite good internally, if not bright. 20-page unillustrated checklist in original wraps laid in.
Catalogue for the sale of Maugham's art collection at Sotheby's on April 10, 1962. Sotheby's printed the catalogue in a then-unusual large format to permit the inclusion of color plates that had been prepared by William Heinemann for "Purely for my Pleasure," Maugham's account of his collection, which was published after the sale. Color plates include rarely reproduced images by Toulouse-Lautrec, Leger, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Pisarro, Renoir, Rouault, Sisley, and Utrillo. Unusual and collectible, even in less-than-pristine condition.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
