Ferguson, Regius Professor of Chemistry at Glasgow, is well known among scholars for his 'Bibliotheca Chemica', a catalogue of the alchemical collection of James Young (1811-1883) published in 1906. This two-volume work describing Ferguson's own collection of some 7500 books (about 2500 on alchemy) and 338 manuscripts was first brought out during World War II in only 40 copies due to paper rationing.
