About This Item

Tony Appleton, Brighton, 1972 reprint of 1928 first edition. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies. Boards, 4to,. xii, 108 pp,. 252 entries. The catalogue was compiled by Graham Pollard, a partner in the firm of Birrell & Garnett. James Mosley, writing in 1983, commented that the catalogue "remains a work of permanent value. Pollard... was concerned, like Morison, to discover the 'original sources on which the scientific study of type design must be based,' and collections of type specimens were a major part of these sources. Published catalogues...were indispensable to the typographical historian. The practical application of Pollard's theory was seen to startling effect in his use of evidence derived from type specimens to convict the forgeries of nineteenth-century pamphlets perpetrated by Thomas James Wise. Copy No. 299. Very Good in a dustwrapper. which is torn with loss.
