About This Item

New York: Bangs & Company, 1885. 8vo.  240 x 150 mm., [9 ½ x 6 inches].  201 pp.  2057 lots plus 20 lots of instruments.  Original coated paper printed wrappers; spine chipped with 2-inch piece missing from top of spine and chip at bottom; edges of paper stock a bit fragile; wrappers dust soiled; otherwise a sound and not unattractive copy. A man of literary tastes, Richard Grant White was involved in almost every aspect of book publishing, authorship, book design and criticism in New York during the post-Civil War period.  His auction sale reflects his eclectic tastes and is filled not only with the history of language, grammar, and orthography which were essential for his research and writing, but also literature in its broadest sense.  He had a considerable collection of Shakespeare works and the publications of the Bard's contemporaries.  He collected editions of many of the most influential French and English authors, and good collection of books on theater and drama in general. McKay, American Book Auction Catalogues, 3250.  Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography,  VI, p. 474.
