About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company / Book of the Month Club, 1951. BCE. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair/Good. 8vo., 277pp. Sharp First Book Club Edition with photo of Salinger on the rear panel of the jacket. Bound in black cloth with titles in gilt on spine. Square, tight and clean throughout with no toning or spotting. A hint of off-setting to paste-downs but barely. Some softness to spine ends. Moderate wear to the bottom edge. Attractive clipped, though unpriced, dust-jacket has chips to the spine ends and tips. Split along the front fold. Toning and surface wear. Not perfect but fairly bright and complete. A presentable collectabe copy and a way for mere mortals to afford an early edition of Salinger's masterpiece.

Synopsis

Published in 1951, The Catcher in the Rye has become a common part of high school and college curricula throughout the English-speaking world and has been translated into all major languages. Since its publication with a $3.00 sticker, it has reportedly sold more than 65 million copies. The novel's antihero, Holden Caulfield, has become a cultural icon for teenage rebellion. Due to its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and teenage angst, it has frequently been met with censorship challenges in the United States making it one of the most challenged books of the 20th century.
